Week 8
Week 8 Lab
Learned
This week was a lot of review due to the test we have in the next class. In lab today, we started by checking on our fast plants; unfortunately, they are officially dying, and some are even dead. We then reviewed genetics, but we learned a lot about mutations today. We did a super fun activity on paper in which we determined if an "average joe" could mutate into a supervillain and a superhero; I learned about the different ways that genetic mutations can affect a superhuman in virtual life vs. how scary genetic mutations can be for humans in real life. We also went on a virtual website and mutated the genes given to us in the simulation. It was really cool how you could watch them transform differently.
Related
In this lab, I related to the knowledge behind genetic mutations, specifically in the chromosomes affecting humans. I am getting my masters in special education, so we learn a lot about how people born with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome, making them 46, and the added one is referred to as the Trisomy-21. This lab was interesting because it gave us a fake perspective on genetic mutations and how they affect the superheroes and villains we see in movies and on tv.
Apply to teaching
This activity showed us a fun way to teach, but it could focus more on the reality of genetic mutation. This was a fun way to engage the kids and have them think about genetic mutation differently. I also enjoy the fast plant activity; watching something go through the lifecycle is always fun. I can apply these things to my future teaching by teaching my students through things that they find interesting such as superheroes.
Clear and Confusing
This lab was apparent and was delivered very well. I don't have any confusion within the lab. I would've liked some examples about how genetic mutations can positively and negatively affect humans because I just got a big takeaway on what it does to superheroes and villains.
Questions
No questions at this time, it was a great review lab for the test!

Hey Lexi, I was also sad to see the fast plants die. I wish that they lived longer. Also I love the background photo for your blog, it is very appealing and appropriate.
ReplyDeleteHi Lexi, I love the way you described the enjoyment of the activity but also the want for different, real-life examples. I think that's a great thing to keep in mind as teachers and something I want to focus on as well - incorporating both fun and fact.
ReplyDeleteHey Lexi, I agree that it's important to balance fun and meaningful activities. Students need real-life examples to understand the material better.
