| 8 Characteristics of Living Things |
Learned this Week
This week I learned about the characteristics of living things. I also learned how to dissect a bean, which was really interesting. We were able to find the seed coat, cotyledon, and embryo. We also learned about what it means for an organism to be dormant vs. alive. I also learned about Germinating seeds, and we learned to not overwater the seeds. I also learned that all you need to do this is a warm environment, water, cotton balls, seeds, and a cup! We dove deeper into the NGSS and worked on identifying all topics within the one standard!
Already knew
Something I related to was when we talked about the 8 characteristics of living things. When we did this, I remembered doing something almost identical in elementary school. It was really cool that all of our groups came up with many different examples for the same topics.
Confusing
I found the information about the 8 characteristics of living things very clearly. The deeper analysis of NGSS is a little confusing, but it is getting easier to understand every time we look at the standards.
Future Use
I really like the direction of the bean; it does a great job showing students a clear seed coat, cotyledon, and embryo. It was such a simple direction that students would have a great time completing it in class.
Questions
At what point does an organism stop being dormant? For example, at what point is the egg alive?

Hi Lexi! I related to what you are confused about. Last week when NGSS was first introduced, I was having a hard time understanding it all. It has gotten better over the week from readings and videos, but it still seems like a lot of words on a page and it's hard for me to differentiate the standards and concepts.
ReplyDeleteHi Lexi! I thought the seed dissection was also super interesting! Looking at your questions you still have, I think I can help. I'm pretty sure for an egg it turns active and alive when it is fertilized. Otherwise I think it stays dormant until then. I'm not sure about other things though.
ReplyDeleteHi Lexi! I also relate to what you're confused about, I still am a bit confused on the NGSS topics and what that all means. I do also thing it was super interesting to see the anatomy of a seed and break down all of the different parts!
ReplyDeleteI also loved seeing the internal structure of the seed as well as understanding why the seed will grow with water and sunlight. It's a great way for students to visually learn!
